about
When I write lyrics, the inspiration comes more from images I like, or certain connotations words might have when following others and what feeling they instil in me, and so on. A story forms from there.
I think Spring Came is a song about contradictions. It’s about how you can feel as though you need something, while at the same time having a complete inappetence for it. It’s about longing for something or someone, while still being fully aware that it is-or they are-bad for you. It’s knowing all of that, and longing still.
Spring Came is about not fully understanding what you want, so you yo-yo between two ends of the extremes: wanting it all, or wanting nothing. The compulsion and the shame that drives that way of thinking. The seesawing between pleasure and pain, and never finding the right balance.
The last verse, though, might be the most hopeful part of the song. Maybe it’s suggesting that spring is like a friend who carries you out of a dark period, and brings you back into the world. Spring is change, it’s hope. Growth. Its rebirth, and transformation and learning to live differently from the way you did before. More hopeful (and more welcomed) than autumn, spring’s a season sandwiched in the extremes. Living in the space between, where life happens. - Pippa
lyrics
“They are singing for you,
Why then does the cold wind blow straight through me?
Why then does the hot sun burn into my skin?
Sickened by you,
Deflated and full to the brim of you
All at once, craving your food
I’m sickened by you.
Spring came
and wiped the winter from memory.
Damp.
She sucked the pain out of me and
Carried us through summer”
